Rachel Matos is a museum lecturer and educator, exhibited portrait artist and independent curator with an impressive list of museum affiliations such as The Norton Simon Museum, The Guggenheim NY, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Bronx Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Matos' museum work encompasses a wide range of areas, which includes working with curators to develop exhibits and create programming, overseeing and training docents/educators/interns, creating art based curriuclums for school districts and gallery lecturing with a specialty in Modern and Contemporary art.
A member of the Independent Curators International, Matos also curates exhibits. Some of her work includes Lorem Ipsum, a solo show featuring the work of graphic artist Tomasz Opasinski; Renacimiento, a group exhibit exploring the idea of rebirth and transformation. She also co-curated Body, a multi-media group exhibit, which studied the emotional and psycholigical perspective of the human body world-wide.
As an artist, Matos' portraits have been exhibited at Urban Sanctuary, Woodmere Art Museum, the Colombian Consulate, the Society of Illustrators and Rockefeller Center. She has also worked as a teaching artist for various institutions, such as the Huntington Museum and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Matos conducts written interviews for Catalysis Projects, an artist-led nonprofit that curates interdisciplinary, collaborative works. Recently, she's made her way online as a contributing writer for several publications, New Latina, Click Latina and Spanglish Baby, and she manages projects for Latina Bloggers Connect, a company that creates brand alliances & campaigns for and with Latina Bloggers. In addition, she serves as the Arts Chair for Sol, an organization that provides networking and mentorship opportunities for Latino professionals. Currently, Matos is merging her marketing, curatorial and education background and creating new exciting projects.
Matos received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts and continued her graduate studies in Modern Art and Critical Studies at Columbia University. She is from New York and now resides in Pasadena, CA.
